In May 2002, Dr. Friedrich K. Port became president of URREA upon the retirement of the organization's founding president, Dr. Philip J. Held. The transition occurred on May 1, when Dr. Held moved into his new position as Senior Researcher with URREA.
The transfer in leadership is a natural one, as Dr. Held and Dr. Port have collaborated closely on medical outcomes research for many years before Dr. Held founded URREA in 1995. Their collaboration has spanned over 14 years, including work on the U.S. Renal Data System (USRDS) and many other projects.
Dr. Held founded the USRDS in 1988 and was its director through 1997. Dr. Held was a Professor of Medicine and Health Services Management at the University of Michigan from 1993 to 1995. Dr. Port was Professor of Medicine (nephrology) and Epidemiology at the University of Michigan Schools of Medicine and Public Health for 27 years.
Dr. Port brings to URREA his international reputation for medical outcomes research, specializing in clinical epidemiology, transplantation, and dialysis. He served as director of the Michigan Kidney Registry from 1984 to 1994, as deputy director of the USRDS Coordinating Center from 1988 to 1999, and as co-director of the University of Michigan Kidney Epidemiology and Cost Center from 1993 to 2002.
