Philip Held Biography -- US Transplant Staff

Philip Held, PhD

Dr. Held is a nationally recognized leader in the field of outcomes research. An economist by training, Dr. Held's long professional career has centered on the development and analysis of large databases related to the study of patients with kidney failure. Dr. Held founded the USRDS in 1988 and was its director through 1997. He was a Professor of Medicine and Health Services Management at the University of Michigan from 1993 to 1995. Dr. Held was also the founder and first president of URREA. He has published extensively in medical journals on a wide range of topics in epidemiology and health economics, including the impact of HLA mismatches on kidney transplant survival, the relationship between length of dialysis and mortality, and initial predictors of mortality in patients with end-stage renal disease (ESRD).
