What do SAFs contain? Scientific Registry of Transplant Recipients

Transplant Files

  • One record per transplant
  • Recipient demographic characteristics such as age, race, ethnicity
  • Recipient clinical characteristics such as diagnosis, blood type, HLA, PRA
  • Candidacy summary, such as wait list date, waiting time, medical urgency status at listing and at transplant
  • Donor summary including demographics, blood type, HLA, cause of death
  • Transplant event descriptors, including ischemic time, calculated HLA mismatch, preservation technique
  • Summarized follow-up information including graft failure and mortality ascertained from follow-up forms, re-listing, re-transplant, Social Security Administration

Candidate Files

  • One record per transplant candidate registration
  • Details of wait list registrations
  • Includes all wait list registrations, both transplanted and non-transplanted
  • Basic demographic and medical background information as in transplant files
  • Timeline of wait list registration: listing and removal dates, transplant date, death date

Donor Detail Files

  • One record per donor with at least one organ recovered for transplant
  • Donor demographics and medical information
  • Organ disposition data for each solid organ

Other Information Available

  • Patient identifiers may be released under special agreement, when necessary for linking to other data sources
  • The structure or content of files released may be altered to facilitate a specific research question. See Custom Data Files (CDFs)
  • Waitlist details files, such as for changes in medical urgency status, may be requested as custom data files
  • Summarized center characteristics, including transplant volume and wait list volume
