Transplant Community and Policy Makers

The primary mission of the SRTR is to support the transplant community — in particular, transplant professionals and policymakers — with analyses to aid in the development of organ allocation and other policies. More generally, the SRTR strives to advance medical care by providing evidence about treatments and outcomes. This research takes the form of reports to policymaking committees, as well as publication and presentation of our research in the medical literature and scientific meetings. In addition to these national-level studies, we also perform analyses specific to each transplant program and organ procurement organization (OPO) in the United States.

Pertinent SRTR resources for professionals and policymakers in the transplant community include:

  • Transplant Program-Specific Reports and OPO-Specific Reports provide detailed information about all phases of the transplant process — from organ procurement and donation through post-transplant outcomes — at a program-specific level. These reports may help centers to identify trends in performance. Program-specific statistics also allow policymakers to identify problems and provide methodological assistance in the rule-making process.
  • Annual Reports provide a yearly look at important issues and outcomes within the national transplant community. These reports offer more than 250 tables of comprehensive transplant data, showing both recent activity and 10-year trends. Analyses of outcome predictors are also included.
  • Annual Report chapters, also published in the American Journal of Transplantation as the SRTR Report on the State of Transplantation, are prepared by transplant experts from across the country. These articles focus on current issues for specific organs. Other chapters discuss issues important across all organs, such as immunosuppression, transplant tourism, and performance measures.
  • The role of the SRTR in the transplant community begins with supporting policy committees administered by the OPTN. Much of the SRTR research is also presented at national scientific meetings and published in the medical literature. The SRTR Publications Database provides the community with a full resume of this work, as well as public-use slides based on each publication.
