STAC: Robert S. Gaston, MD
Robert S. Gaston, MD is Professor of Medicine and Medical Director of Kidney and Pancreas
Transplantation at the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB). A 1979 graduate of the St. Louis
University School of Medicine, he completed his residency and fellowship in nephrology at the University
of Arkansas in Little Rock. Dr. Gaston was the first fellow in transplant medicine at UAB,
where he has been a faculty member since 1990. He is currently a member of the Board of Directors
of the American Society of Transplantation, and served from 2003-2006 as an Associate Editor of the
American Journal of Transplantation. He has chaired or cochaired task forces or working groups on such
topics as diabetes mellitus, access to transplantation, and living donor followup. A prolific contributor
to the literature of transplantation, Dr. Gaston has authored or coauthored over 200 articles, chapters,
and abstracts. He coedited (with Swedish transplant surgeon Jonas Wadstrom) the 2005 book
“Living Donor Kidney Transplantation: Current Practices, Emerging Trends and Evolving Challenges.”
